Thanksgiving Turkey West Paw Toppl Recipe for Enrichment

Now that I live on the east coast of the US, I have really started to fall in love with the fall season. There’s nothing like the changing colors of the leaves in the trees to signal the coming of the holidays. This Thanksgiving, I decided to create a turkey for my two dogs, Patches and Kiko, using the West Paw Zogoflex Toppl. Check out the recipe and give it a try for your pup! Ingredients for 2 servings

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 carrot (you can also use sweet potato, yam or kabocha)

  • 2 West Paw Zogoflex Toppl, size small

  • 40 grams of plain boiled turkey or chicken, cut into small cubes

  • 3 spoonfuls of canned pumpkin, only ingredient listed should be pumpkin

  • 1 small manzano, or small banana

  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, only ingredient listed should be peanuts

Directions

1. Separate the egg yolk and egg whites for both eggs. The egg yolk is going to be used for the tail feathers and the egg whites are going to be used as filler in the Toppl.

2. Beat the egg yolk.

3. Cook the egg yolk plain on low heat by pouring it into the pan to create thick strips. Plan to make 4 strips. Using a non-stick pan (e.g. ceramic pan) helps since no oil should be used.

4. Flip the strips to cook both sides.

5. Put the egg yolk strips aside.

6. Cook the egg whites by scrambling them in the pan.

7. Put all the cooked egg aside for later.

8. Cut the carrot at an angle to create oval slides. You’ll need 6 slices total for the tail feathers and feet.

9. For 4 of the carrot slices and the egg yolk, trim pieces off to create a petal shape so that the bottom part is narrower. Don’t toss the egg trimmings away because we’ll use them for the wing feathers.

10. For the remaining 2 carrot slices, cut them each in half widthwise.

11. Cut off the inner corners. Don’t toss the cut corners away because we’ll use them for the beaks of the turkey.

12. Now we’re going to assemble all the ingredients in the Toppl. Stuff the egg whites into the bottom of the Toppl and press them down.

13. Add the cut meat to the Toppl and press it down.

14. Add the canned pumpkin to the Toppl to top it off.

15. Wipe any of the excess pumpkin off the rim and sides of the Toppl.

16. Peel the manzano and cut it in half. Each half will serve as the head and neck of the turkey.

17. Press the banana into the Toppl with the pointy side facing up. This is going to make the Toppl really wobbly. You can use whatever you have around to help keep the Toppl propped up.

18. Stick the 2 carrot strips and 2 egg strips into each Toppl. Since the egg yolk is still floppy, you can stick in the stiffer carrot slices first, and then add the egg yolk strips in so that they are supported by the carrot slices.

26. To add the wing feathers, smear peanut butter on the sides of the Toppl, and press the egg trimmings into the peanut butter. Do this on both sides.

27. For the beak, smear some peanut butter on the carrot and stick it to the end of the banana.

28. Add peanut butter to the top of the feet.

29. Place the feet in a shallow dish or bowl that has a wall you can support the Toppl on, then place the Toppl on top.

30. Freeze the Toppl overnight.

31. When you take the Toppl out of the freezer, the carrot feet may get stuck to the dish when you try to lift the Toppl. If that happens reattach the feet to the Toppl using peanut butter.
