Valentine’s Day West Paw Toppl Recipe for Enrichment
It’s almost Valentine’s Day and what better way to show love to my dogs than giving them some food enrichment. This Valentine’s Day, I decided to create a dragon fruit inspired treat for my two dogs, Patches and Kiko, using the West Paw Zogoflex Toppl. Check out the recipe and give it a try for your pup! Ingredients for 2 servings
2 West Paw Zogoflex Toppl, size small
Filling
4 teaspoons unsweetened apple sauce
40 grams of plain boiled chicken breast
Trimmings from cutting decorations out of dragon fruit
Biscuits
1 1/2 cup almond flour
2/3 cup plain old fashioned rolled oats
1 egg
1/2 cup of raspberries
1 tablespoon water
Decorations
2 quarter-inch thick slices of dragon fruit
1 carrot
2 natural chews (e.g. 3-4” pieces of The Honest Kitchen Beams Ocean Chews Cod Fish Skins Dehydrated Dog Treats)
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°.
2. Combine 1 1/2 cups of almond flour, 2/3 cup of plain old fashioned rolled oats, 1 egg, and about 1/2 cup of raspberries together. Mash the raspberries and mix until thoroughly combined.
3. Add some water (about 1 tablespoon) to get the dough to a pliable consistency, but don’t add too much water or else it will get too sticky.
4. Hand mold, use cookie cutters, or use oven-safe and food-safe silicone mats to create shapes from the dough. If you use cookie cutters, rolling out the dough between two pieces of parchment paper will be easiest.
5. Pop the biscuits in the oven and let them bake for about 20 minutes, or until they are firm.
6. Carve a couple decorative flowers from the larger end of the carrot. I used this YouTube video. You can save some of the leftover trimmings to fill the Toppl.
7. Cut two quarter-inch slices of the dragon fruit and carve out a heart shape. You can use any leftover dragon fruit trimmings to fill the Toppl.
8. Put a couple small spoonfuls of applesauce at the bottom.
9. Add cut pieces of boiled chicken breast.
10. Then add in some of the leftover dragon fruit trimmings or carrots.
11. Stick the carrot flower into the hole on the front of the Toppl. You can add some applesauce on the back of the flower to help it stay in.
12. Stick in the chew all the way to the bottom. If at this point the biscuits are not done baking, place the Toppls into the freezer.
13. Once the biscuits are done baking and have cooled down a bit, add a biscuit and the heart-shaped dragon fruit slice into the Toppl.
14. You can either serve this as is, or you can pop the Toppl into the freezer overnight.
